SIHB Frequently Asked Questions

Can you describe the awards and programs?

  • Violet Richardson Award  is an award for girls between the ages of 14 and 17 which recognizes outstanding volunteer service within the community.
  • Women’s Opportunity Award SIA’s signature program, is designed to aid women with primary financial responsibility for their families. They must be attending, or have been accepted to, an undergraduate degree or vocational skills training program.
  • Dolly Wakeham Award - Each year the club sponsors one or two families where the mother is the single head of the household. Club members help the family with all their needs for the year, including holiday trimmings and meals.
  • Library Literacy Program - Whether donating books or participating in a Literacy Bee, each year a donation is made to our local H. B. Library’s Literacy Program.
  • Project Self Sufficiency PSS is a low income single parent program for disadvantaged citizens. All (moms and dads) must be in school/job training, and meet HUD low-income requirements and live, work or be in school in Huntington Beach. Throughout the year, club members donate food, clothing, etc. to the program & we help volunteer at the Christmas Party for the PSS families.
  • Annual Holiday Fundraiser - Traditionally held in the first week of December, this is the clubs only fundraiser of the year. All Members are expected to help, contribute and participate in this very important and fun event.

Meetings & Operations Questions

  • When do committees meet? Throughout the year, meeting for breakfast, lunch, or after work, even after or before a regular meeting. It depends on the individuals who make up the committee.
  • When am I expected to participate? At as many meetings as you can attend. You are also expected to participate in community activities whenever our Club or committee is participating.
  • When can I ask questions? Anytime, the more questions you ask, the more you will know and the better Soroptimist you will become! Clubs should use Robert’s Rules of Order at business meetings.
  • When should I wear my Soroptimist pin? Anytime, at meetings, at all Soroptimist functions, but feel free to wear your pin all the time, over your heart. It’s an excellent way to promote Soroptimism.
  • When are District and Regional meetings held?  Members meet at the District Fall meeting, Winter Workshop, Region Spring Conference, the Federation’s Biennial Convention and SI’s Quadrennial Convention.
  • What is "going dark"? Our Club goes dark during July and August, which means no meetings for two months.
  • What are service funds? Funds raised at community events, raffles, auctions, etc . are used for community projects or Soroptimist education.
  • What are club funds/general fund? Funds raised within the club by dues, raffles, fines, scrip, etc. The funds are used for club operating expenses.
  • What are personal projects? From time to time, members may undertake a personal project to raise funds for Club use. It shall be the privilege of the donor member to designate how such funds shall be used.
  • What are the four federations? SI of the Americas, SI of the Southwest Pacific, SI of Europe, SI of Great Britain and Ireland.
  • What is the Soroptimist Grace? For the bread upon the board Make us truly thankful Lord. For each one meeting here Whom our hearts hold close and dear. For this day, O Lord above, Now accept our grateful love. Amen
  • What is the Soroptimist Pledge? I pledge allegiance to Soroptimism and to the ideals for which it stands; The sincerity of Friendship, The Joy of Achievement, The Dignity of Service, The Integrity of Profession, The Love of Country. I will put forth my greatest effort to promote, uphold and defend these ideals for a larger fellowship in Home, in Society, in Business, for Country and for God.
