Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Award
Recipient 2008 - Linda Luu
|
Linda Luu is a single mother of six-year-old Chloe and
four-year-old Braden.
A survivor of domestic violence, Linda was spending most of
her time and energy working a full time sales job, with the
majority of her paycheck diverted to childcare each month.
She realized that time with her children was much more
important, as well as working towards a career that she was
passionate about. In the fall of 2005 she made the hardest
decision of her life, and returned to school after a long
hiatus to pursue her dream of nursing.
During her first semester back at school, Linda was
bed-ridden with many serious health issues. She was able to
overcome with the support of her family, instructors and
counselors. Many of her professor’s state that Linda’s best
quality is her perseverance and her determination not to
give up. Her children are the driving forces that keep her
going and striving each and every day.
Financially it has always been a struggle for Linda to make
due, but organizations such as the Golden West Scholarship
Foundation and Soroptimist International of Huntington Beach
have made it possible for her to continue her education.
Linda finally gets to start living her dream, and will be
starting nursing school in the fall of 2008.
She looks forward to one day serving our country as an Air
Force Nurse, and hopes to one day give back to her community
by volunteering her skills and time through humanitarian
work.
Linda is grateful to be honored as the Soroptimist Women’s
Opportunity Award Winner for 2008.
