Margie
Bunten and her committee chose Rachel Garlington as the
Violet Richardson Award winner this year.
Rachel is 14 years old and belongs to Troop 1092 at Sts.
Simon and Jude Catholic School. Rachel received her Silver
Award, the second highest award a young lady can receive in
Girl Scouting, by donating many hours helping the less
fortunate in the community of Huntington Beach.
Her Silver Award project consisted of spending 50 plus
volunteer hours on the service project “Suitcases for Kids,”
which benefits foster children. Rachel and her fellow
cadettes made blankets, and Rachel and other cadettes went
to the Huntington Beach Service Unit and presented their
proposal for the project and requested a donation of
suitcases. A letter was written to Mervyn’s, Wal-Mart and
private businesses for donations.
The girls made blankets and placed them in the donated
suitcases along with a stuffed animal and a sincere letter
of encouragement. The troop filled 30 suitcases over a 2
year period and brought them to Orangewood Children’s
Foundation. Not only did Rachel and her troop receive their
Silver Service Award, but have shown their love and
dedication to others. Rachel will receive a $1000.00 award,
$500.00 for herself and $500 for a charily of her choice.
Keep up the good work Rachel and become a Soroptimist in a
few years!
