Women’s
Opportunity Award Winner 2006
Mirjana Dujanovic
|
Mirjana’s
career goal is to get more education in her field of
accounting so that she can be more confident and better able
to apply for a higher paying position in order to provide
for her children. Currently she works two jobs to pay for
the necessities and with better training and a higher paying
position, can spend more time with her children, Jana, 14,
and Sava, 10.
Mira, as she is known to us, and her children and are from
Valjevo, Serbia and they left and came to America to escape
the injustices of the Milosevic regime. Mira’s ex-husband
decided he didn’t like America and returned to Serbia. Mira
had protested in public against Milosevic, and so returning
home was not an option for her.
Mira and her children lived in New York and then came to
California. She was a school teacher in Serbia and now works
as an accountant at the Marriott. She does not receive any
support from the children’s father, and works a second job
on weekends to make ends meet. Mira also takes on-line
classes at night to further her education. Mira is truly
deserving of this award.
SIHB Soroptimist, Phyllis Nichols, accompanied Mira on a
trip to Serbia last year and Mira’s family expressed their
sincere appreciation to SIHB for all the support
we have given her. Congratulations, Mira. Mira will receive
her award at the Women of Distinction Luncheon, 12 noon, May
12th at the Hilton Waterfront
Resort Hotel. |
