Chelsea
Smith epitomizes the upward mobility goal of the Soroptimist
International Women’s Opportunity Awards.
Chelsea has overcome severe obstacles and has dramatically
turned her life around. Only a few years ago this young
woman faced great adversity. Her pregnancy prompted her to
get an education and she began college when her baby was
only 6 weeks old. Chelsea is determinedly making a life and
a home for herself and her toddler son Adam through
education.
Chelsea is dedicated to her education at Orange Coast
College, where she has earned a cumulated a 3.83 grade point
average. She plans to earn a Business Administration
Bachelor of Science, with emphasis in accounting to better
support her family. Chelsea works for Orange Coast College
part-time as a Student Assistant. Chelsea’s employer
recommended her for the Women’s Opportunity Award,
describing her as “blessed with an extraordinary quick
intellect and has made remarkable strides in her academic,
professional and especially her family life” going on to
call her “a positive influence in my own life.” Another
co-worker described Chelsea as “an inspiration.”
SIHB honored Chelsea at the making A Difference For Women
luncheon on April 19, 2007 held at the Hilton Waterfront
Beach Resort.
Chelsea went on to receive a very distinguished award with
our Desert Coast Region at our Spring Conference on April
27, 2007 held at the Hilton in Irvine. This recognition came
with an additional cash award.
